Durability
Epoxy and urethane floor coatings are hardy materials that resist impact damage and abrasions, providing an extremely strong surface capable of supporting heavy machinery and equipment. Being seamless surfaces, they’re easy to keep clean while remaining resistant to mold or mildew infestation. Both coating types make an excellent addition to food processing facilities, hospitals and other back-of-house facilities.
Regular cleaning and maintenance are key elements to prolonging an epoxy flooring system’s lifespan. Commercial floors often collect dirt, grit, and debris which can scratch floor resins; to combat this effectively you should sweep regularly – for high traffic areas this could mean daily; otherwise for low traffic areas every other day is sufficient. When needed you should mop with soft mop with mild cleaners such as Simple Green or CLR Cleaner (or use half cup per gallon of water diluted ammonia solution as needed on particularly stubborn spots). Finally for stubborn spots ammonia solution can also help – half cup per gallon can work wonders!
Note that polyurethane floor resin is more susceptible to humidity during its curing process than epoxy resins; high levels of humidity could easily compromise PU floors early on and should be avoided in locations with an elevated moisture levels. Epoxy resins tend to be more tolerant of humidity levels, thus making them the better choice in most circumstances.
Easy to Clean
Epoxy flooring is ideal for easy cleanup. Regular sweeping and dust mopping should remove debris, while deck brushes, soft bristle brooms or mechanized floor scrubbers may be useful in deep scrubbing the floor surface. A standard kitchen cleaning sponge or degreasers such as Simple Green are useful in eliminating grease stains on your epoxy coating floor surface; citrus or vinegar-based chemicals could damage it over time.
Epoxy surfaces are very resilient, meaning they will stand up well against wear and tear; however, large dents or scratches cannot tolerated by epoxy flooring. Hybrid polyurethane floors would be better suited for areas exposed to high levels of industrial wear as it will resist these more than epoxy can.
Along with routine cleaning, it’s also wise to install walk-off mats at entranceways and workstations in order to catch dirt and sand that enters the garage or workspace. Plywood may also be placed underneath heavy equipment or tools in order to protect floors from excessive pressure or impact, and epoxy floors should receive periodic applications of clear top coat which restores their shine while increasing durability. Once epoxy or urethane floors have been installed it’s also important to establish an ongoing maintenance program to extend their lifespan and prolong its longevity – both of which should also increase durability over time. Eventually it must also become part of an ongoing maintenance program after their installation to ensure maximum longevity of durability – both will extend their lives!
Aesthetics
Epoxy flooring’s appeal extends far beyond its durability and ease of cleaning; it also produces stunning designer floors to turn any space into your showroom of dreams! Maintaining a clean and hygienic commercial space is vital to customer satisfaction, worker safety, and facility longevity. This is particularly relevant in industrial settings which must be kept spotlessly tidy; hence why a durable yet easy-to-clean epoxy floor makes an excellent choice for high traffic areas.
Clean epoxy and urethane floors require little upkeep for maximum performance, with both being low maintenance. To keep them looking their best, simply sweep regularly; high traffic areas may need this done daily or every other day. In between sweeping sessions, mop the surface using a hard foam mop with mild cleaner (we suggest Simple Green). For tough stains use an ammonia-water mixture containing 2-3 ounces of ammonia per gallon of water instead.
Polyurethane floor coatings also boast shorter pot lives and recoat times than epoxy, meaning you can complete multicoat projects much more quickly – ideal for 24-hour businesses that can’t afford any downtime. Furthermore, its UV resistance prevents yellowing over time.
Maintenance
While epoxy flooring can withstand high volumes of traffic, they do require routine maintenance in order to remain attractive for years. Implementing an ongoing program of regular cleanings will reduce scratching and soilage build-up while prolonging their overall appearance for years.
Start off your maintenance program right by regularly sweeping the floor. Aim to sweep daily or more often if your facility sees heavy foot and forklift traffic; this helps remove loose dirt, grit, and other debris before it causes permanent damage to your floors.
Mop your epoxy floors regularly using an acid-free and non-toxic cleaner, like diluted ammonia. Mix a small amount with hot water, and use this solution to mop the floors, leaving them clean and looking their best! Avoid vinegar or citric acid-based cleaners which could degloss and reduce anti-skid properties of the floors.
Clean up any liquid spills immediately. For instance, if your facility houses vehicles such as cars, wipe up antifreeze, oil and other car fluids with shop towels or paper. Engine oil contains chemical agents that could cause lasting damage to epoxy floors if left in its wake; similarly with paint, household cleaners and other potentially abrasive substances; therefore any such spills must be cleaned up as soon as they occur to ensure good condition of floors; use walk-off mats at doorways to keep these substances away from epoxy floors!
